P2702-MRT

Homogenisation for mycotoxin analysis

Homogenisation is one of the most crucial steps in mycotoxin analysis.

P2702-MRT is focussed on the correct homogenisation of a sample of wheat with a spot contamination of zearalenone.

A sample of 3 kg of wheat (whole grains) is provided. The material is spiked with zearalenone.

The labs are requested to

  • homogenise the entire material and take a representative sample for analysis.
  • document the process of compiling the laboratory sample and of the homogenisation of the compiled sample. Images and corresponding explanations are asked for as well as comprehensive answers related to some additional questions about the process.
  • analyse the homogenised sample for zearalenone.

Evaluation:

  • Homogenisation: the evaluation is based on a points system. Points are awarded for the quality of the homogenate, the completeness and informative value of the process documentation, and the answers to the additional questions. The analysis as well as the process of homogenisation are considered for evaluation.
  • Analytical results: the results are evaluated with respect to to the comparability (z-score).

The analytical results, the photographical documentation, as well as the answers related to the questionnaire are summarised in the final report. For reasons of fairness, only those participants that agree to the publication of their detailed documentation will receive these parts of the report. The data will help to identify shortcomings, built the basis for further discussion and thus help to enhance the quality of the homogenisation of cereals samples for mycotoxin analysis.
