P2420-RT

Ethylene oxide in peppercorn (piper nigrum)

Ethylene oxide resp. 2-chloroethanol were broadly discussed in the media over the last years. The application of ethylene oxide for plant protection and fumigation of food is prohibited within the EU.

A maximum residue level of 0.1 mg/kg applies for ethylene oxide (sum of ethylene oxide and 2-chloroethanol expressed as ethylene oxide) in peppercorn (piper nigrum).

The aim of the ring test is

  • the correct quantification with respect to the
    comparability criterion (z-score ≤ |2|), and
  • the correct quantification with respect to the
trueness criterion (70-120 % recovery of the spiked level).

A reporting limit of 0.01 mg/kg is required.
