P2015-RT

Tropane alkaloids in herbal tea

According to a draft of the working group Agricultural Contaminants maximum levels of tropane alkaloids of 25 µg/kg (sum of atropine and scopolamine) are discussed with respect to herbal teas (dried product) and even lower maximum levels of 5 µg/kg (sum of atropine and scopolamine) are discussed with respect to herbal teas for infants and young children (dried product).

P2015-RT is thus designed to cover the most common tropane alkaloids atropine and scopolamine in herbal teas. Homogenised dried blackberry leaves or dried raspberry leaves are provided as test material. The test material is spiked with atropine and scopolamine. LOQs of 2.5 µg/kg are required for atropine resp. scopolamine.
