P2305-RT

Perfluorinated compounds in babyfood products

EFSA derived a new TWI related to perfluorinated compounds in 2020.

The TWI of 4.4 ng/kg bw per week applied to the sum of four perflourinated compounds (PFCs):

  • perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS),
  • perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA),
  • perflurononanoic acid (PFNA), and
  • perflurorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS).

All four PFCs are covered by this ring test.

Two test materials are provided. A sample of infant formula as well as a sample of a ready-to-eat babyfood, which contains fish products.

Both materials contain spiked and/or incurred levels of the four PFCs.

The test is designed for low levels of PFCs in babyfood, thus LOQs of 0.3 µg/kg are required for all PFCs mentioned above.
